Changes to Potential Project #2: now Bob L. Burger Recreation Renovation and Expansion
The latest information
After watching the first community meeting about this project on April 2nd, and reading the Lafayette Listens page that was announced during the meeting, I am updating this information.
In my report “Potential $ ballot question for 2025,” I told you there might be a ballot question this year asking voters for a tax increase to fund the improvement and redesign of two current city facilities and to build a new civic center. The city plans to provide information about the projects and conduct a poll to gauge resident support. Info about two upcoming city meetings can be found at the bottom of this report.
Possible project number one is the redesign and expansion of the city’s Parks and Public Works Service Center.
Possible project number three is a new City Hall/Civic Center
Possible project number two:
BOB L. BURGER RECREATION RENOVATION AND EXPANSION
This project is now called the Bob L. Burger Recreation Renovation and Expansion. It expands the rec center by 30%.
At the community education session it was mentioned that incorporating the senior center into this complex was part of the concept, you can see it in the graphic below, it’s at the northwest corner of the building. Adding a pickleball court, rooftop workout area and a teen space are also mentioned.
WATCH THE MEETING
You can watch the first community education session here. Members of the public were there and asked questions.
A SURVEY AND A POLL
After reading the Lafayette Listens page you will find a survey at the bottom. There is a Spanish version. A poll will also be coming your way.
COST IF ALL THREE PROJECTS ARE INCLUDED IN A NOVEMBER BALLOT QUESTION, AND WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU
ORIGINAL OPTION A
From a January 28, 2025, staff memo:
“ ‘Option A’ would replace, redesign, and expand the entire aquatics area of BBRC, providing a new configuration for users that is safer for all users, a larger slide, a warm water pool allowing the potential for therapeutic aquatics, an indoor whirlpool, and a larger lap pool. While both options would renovate existing office space and the locker rooms, “Option A” would also expand the non-aquatic fitness space to allow for additional community programming. The cost estimate for “Option A” in 2024 at the time of design was approximately $29.2 million.”
In a February 25, 2025, staff memo, it says, “The preliminary cost estimates are $34 million for the Bob Burger Recreation Center ‘Option A’ renovation.”

Want to offer more support? Awesome!
Assuming a bond is passed, if the city sells the old city hall and senior center after building the new facilities, will they use that money to pay down the bond or just put the money in the general fund?
