$650,000 awarded to local nonprofits
Here's the breakdown of the funds raised via our Health and Human Services Tax
In June 2023 I wrote a piece titled Can you help? It gave the background on a 2019 voter-approved sales tax for mental health and human services. I explained that an advisory committee had been formed to review grant applications from nonprofits and to recommend disbursement of funding to these groups. Not many people had stepped forward to apply and I asked if anyone reading might consider being part of this committee.
In July 2023 in a piece called Thanks to the applicants I reported that 15 people had applied and the Mental Health and Human Services Grant Program Advisory Committee was established, with 7 members.
At their November 21st meeting the city council approved the recommendations from the committee. Here is the list showing the funding distribution totaling $650,000.
*Advisory Committee recommends a reduction in funding from the requested amount.
Another reason to Shop Local!
This happened because the voters said yes to increasing our sales tax by 0.10%, or 1.0 cents on a $10 purchase. Each time you (and also non-residents) shop in Lafayette you are helping to provide funding to these worthy nonprofits which in turn assist those who need help in our community and those surrounding us.
