What's the plan for the King Soopers site?
An answer from our Economic Development Director
Along with many of you, I am wondering what the city plans to do after King Soopers moves to Nine Mile Corner in Erie and leaves an empty store in Lafayette. I reached out to Brigid Keating our Economic Development Director, and asked. I was surprised to learn the answer, below is her reply.
Due to the revenue sharing agreement we have with Erie regarding Nine Mile (and also the as yet undeveloped land across 287 known as the Tebo property. Don’t know about this? Check it out here) we will get 50% of the sales tax collected at the new store when it opens. Our agreement with Erie actually covers the entire Nine Mile commercial area but as part of the deal we committed to help them pay off their debt on the development which won’t happen until 2038. Yes, you read that right, 2038.
Hi Karen,
Thanks for reaching out and great to hear from you!
I’ve been working with Dillon Companies, Inc (who owns Kroger and King Soopers) since I’ve started. Originally, they planned to sell the site. The direction they are currently pursuing is to maintain ownership and look for a private joint-venture partner for the site. Since they are a private property owner and national firm, we are looking at public-private partnership opportunities to help influence a successful outcome on the site. We are continuing conversations with them as they decide which direction to go.
I know the community has various concerns with King Soopers relocating. As you know, we’ll get joint sales tax revenue from the new store which will be less than a mile away.
Hope this update helps!

Not 2028 , 2038!
Never knew that Lafayette was going to assist Erle in paying off their debt. What a sweet deal for Erle! I'm not fan of public-private partnerships. Usually the public (tax payer) gets screwed!
