Potential Bus Rapid Transit superstation and underpass at 287 and Lucerne
Design study in the works
THE STATE HIGHWAY 7 PRIORITY 1A PRECONSTRUCTION PROJECT
At their June 4th meeting the City Council approved an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with the City and County of Broomfield, Boulder County, Thornton, and the Town of Erie to share costs for the design of six Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) stations with each jurisdiction contributing funding for stops in their city.
Broomfield will lead the 2-3 year design project. Lafayette will kick in $28,750 to bring the preliminary design of what is being called a superstation at 287 and Lucerne to 80% completion to determine the feasibility of an underpass at that location.
From the staff memo
Background Information:
The concept of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) on State Highway (SH) 7 and US 287 was initially discussed in 2018 as part of a Preliminary Environmental Linkage Plan to conceptualize regional transit service from Brighton to Boulder. The City has participated in multiple other studies to further the concept, and regional transit service is starting in 2026 as part of a different regional grant application.
In 2020, a station area concept plan was approved that contained two concepts for US 287 and Lucerne Drive. The station will serve both SH 7 and US 287 BRT Stations in the future and includes a proposed underpass of US 287. The project is commonly referred to as “the superstation.”

Want to offer more support? Awesome!
I'm wondering how a transit center there would impact the states new requirements for high density housing in that area. If I'm understanding HB24-1313 correctly, a transit center there would also mean that we would end up with some state madated high rise apartment building somewhere near there. Is that right? And is that potential requirement something that should be included in the consideration for a super transit center?
Awesome News! We really need an underpass on 287. Both last Friday and yesterday I was almost hit walking to cross 287 westbound at Diamond Circle, at 11:30 AM by two different cars making right turns onto Diamond Circle. Cars were southbound and going fast through the RED light to turn on Diamond Circle, without stopping. Scary. Yes, I notified Lafayette police yesterday, as I was able to get that license plate number, and the officer spoke with the driver as I found the NoStoponRed vehicle parked next to Starbucks.
Currently, I and my neighbors will not take the bus because it is too dangerous to cross 287. I try to cross 287 on foot only in non-commuting hours from 10 AM to 2 PM window - even then it’s dangerous. Some neighbors will not cross 287 on foot or on bike.
