This is the building that will be converted into the Kalita Grill Greek Cafe. It’s the old Jack’s Pet Place building.
On the Lafayette Urban Renewal Authority agenda for November 14, 2023, there is a presentation for a Site Plan and Architectural Review (SPAR) for 801 S Public Road.
The SPAR application covers site improvements, two minor building additions, façade modifications, and a change in use to convert the building at 801 S. Public Road from retail to restaurant.
The property is located southwest of the intersection of S. Public Road and Spaulding Street, between Kimbark Street and Waneka Way, zoned B1 (Community Service Business), and within the Old Town Urban Renewal Area.
Building Modifications
• Demolition of most walls to be rebuilt in place
• 423 square foot addition at the front of the building
• Refrigeration units placed at the rear of the building
• Patio for outdoor dining (4 tables)
• Façade makeover for all four elevations
• Rooftop-screened mechanical equipment
Building Modification Description
The structure was built in 1930 as a residence and was later converted to commercial use. Over time, building additions were constructed, and the façade was modified to include new windows and doors and a decorative cupola. The proposed façade would establish a contemporary style with a variety of building materials and two sets of storefront windows. The original house with its gabled roof, the top double-hung window, and the non-original decorative cupola would remain.
Site Improvements
• Re-establish connection to the alley at the rear of the site
• Reduce the width of the curb cut on S. Public Rd
• Reconfigure the parking lot to eliminate three spaces at the front of the building and increase the total number of spots from 14 to 17
• Install landscaping where the parking lot will be removed
• New onsite walkways for pedestrian access
• New trash enclosure at the rear of the property
• Parking lot lighting
• Re-establish 3 street trees
• Decrease impervious surface to improve drainage flows
